Can short players dunk?

Yes, but the jump is bigger. Here is how much, what helps, and a realistic way to work toward it.

Height is not a rule, it is a head start. The jump you need is the rim height minus your standing reach, plus a margin, so a shorter player simply has more height to find in the air. Spud Webb, listed at 5′7″, won the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, and plenty of players under 6 feet dunk regularly. It takes a big vertical, good mechanics and time.

How much vertical shorter players need

These estimates use the 1.31 × height reach rule and a basic dunk margin. Your own measured reach may be higher or lower.

Estimated vertical needed for shorter players
Height Est. reach Basic dunk (10 ft) Basic dunk (9 ft) Basic dunk (8 ft)
5′ 0″ 6′ 6.6″ 47.4 in 35.4 in 23.4 in
5′ 2″ 6′ 9.2″ 44.8 in 32.8 in 20.8 in
5′ 4″ 6′ 11.8″ 42.2 in 30.2 in 18.2 in
5′ 5″ 7′ 1.2″ 40.9 in 28.8 in 16.8 in
5′ 6″ 7′ 2.5″ 39.5 in 27.5 in 15.5 in
5′ 8″ 7′ 5.1″ 36.9 in 24.9 in 12.9 in
5′ 10″ 7′ 7.7″ 34.3 in 22.3 in 10.3 in

The drop between columns is the useful part. Moving from a 10 ft to a 9 ft rim takes 12 inches off the jump needed, and to 8 ft takes 24. For the full set of heights, see the vertical needed to dunk by height.

What helps shorter players most

  • Reach. Measure rather than estimate. A long wingspan can add several inches over the height rule, and every inch is an inch less to jump.
  • Take-off. A fast, well-timed approach turns running speed into height, and most dunks are done off a run.
  • Hands and ball. A bigger hand needs less margin above the rim, and a smaller ball is easier to learn on.
  • Consistency. Being able to repeat a high jump matters more than a single best attempt.

A realistic path to the first dunk

  1. Measure your standing reach and your vertical with the standing reach calculator and the vertical jump calculator.
  2. Enter both into the dunk calculator to see your gap for a basic dunk on a 10 ft rim.
  3. Practise the movement on a lower rim, such as 8 or 9 ft, and raise it in small steps as your vertical improves.
  4. Build leg strength and add plyometrics gradually, then re-test every few weeks to see the gap close.

Keep it safe

Hard jumping loads tendons and joints. Warm up, increase jump volume gradually, and stop if something hurts. A shorter player's gap can be large, so give it months rather than weeks. The numbers here are estimates from reach arithmetic, so they show a target and not a guarantee; for 5′ 5″ it is a long road, but a measurable one.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 5′5″ player dunk?
It is possible but demanding. Using the 1.31 × height reach estimate, a 5′5″ player needs about 40.9 in for a basic dunk on a 10 ft rim. Long arms, large hands and a lot of training lower the bar in practice.
Who is the shortest player to win the NBA Slam Dunk Contest?
Spud Webb, listed at 5′7″, won the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, which is one of the best-known examples of a shorter player dunking at the highest level.
Should shorter players start on a lower rim?
It is a sensible way to learn. A 9 or 8 ft rim lets you rehearse the movement, hand placement and timing while your vertical builds, and you can raise the rim in small steps.
